Centre Psychiatrique Shabunda

This psychiatric centre is situated deep in the interior of the province of South-Kivu, some 350 km from the nearest city Bukavu. The town of Shabunda can only be reached on foot or by plane. Many patients are victims of the ongoing violent conflicts in the region. They suffer from Post-traumatic stress disorder due to the traumas they have witnessed or experienced. Many of the female patients suffer from the psychological consequences of sexual violence by the armed forces.
