The United Nations turned 70 on the 24th of October, 2015. As international NGO, Fracarita International is actively involved in specific councils and conferences at UN-level, especially in the field of mental health care. 24 October has been celebrated as United Nations Day since 1948. UN Day marks the anniversary of the entry into force in 1945 of the UN Charter. Dr. Guislain Award Ceremony

​The Dr. Guislain Award Ceremony will take place on 8 October 2015, at the occasion of World Mental Health Day, in Flanders Opera in Ghent. The award reaches out to social and/or cultural initiatives that have made an exceptional contribution in breaking the stigma that today still characterize societies' perception on mental illnesses. The award is a collaboration between Janssen Research & Development and the Dr. Guislain Museum of the Brothers of Charity, two institutes with a longstanding involvement and heritage in the field of mental health care and research. Symposium '200 Years of Breaking Chains'

On September 30th 2015, the symposium ‘200 Years of Breaking Chains’ took place in the Museum Dr. Guislain of the Brothers of Charity. Bro. Réne Stockman, general superior of the Brothers of Charity and president of Fracarita International, gave an overview of 200 years of mental health care by the Brothers of Charity. Two international speakers gave a state of affairs on the present mental health care situation in their own country (Burundi and Indonesia respectively) and the efforts made by the Brothers of Charity in that field. New exhibition at Dr. Guislain Museum (Belgium)

​ On 30 September 2015, it was exactly 200 years ago that the mentally ill were released from the shackles in the crypt of the medieval Castle of Gerard the Devil in Ghent. Canon Triest and the Bothers of Charity were the instigators. This event can be seen as the beginning of psychiatric care in Belgium. Exhibition By means of photographs, film, testimonials, etc., “Out of the shadows” shows the degrading way in which mentally ill people were treated in the past, and also too often today. The exhibition looks at the differences in approaching mental illness worldwide, and shows the many forms in which chains nowadays appear and are broken. More info:
