Newman Institute of Social Work (NISW)

This college is one of the only institutes for higher education in the region (= 1.5 x the surface area of Belgium). The young participants are trained as social workers, a professional training scheme that is officially recognised by the Tanzanian government. The institute provides a response to the great need for professional social workers who will focus upon supporting the local people in tackling the social problems in Kigoma, one of the poorest regions in Tanzania. The Newman Institute of Social Work came into being through a partnership of the Artevelde University College in Ghent (Belgium) and Ahadi, the international institute for distance learning in the African Great Lakes region. The training lasts for 3 years and may be undertaken either directly or through distance learning.
