Home de la Vierge des Pauvres (HVP) Gatagara - Rwamagana
Home de la Vierge des Pauvres (HVP) Gatagara - Rwamagana is a centre for special primary and secondary education for children with visual impairment. It is located 50 km east of Kigali and provides special primary education for blind and partially sighted children. In January 2010, the school received official recognition from the government to start with Fast Track 9 Years Basic Education (FT9YBE) for blind children. With that, the Rwandan government endorses the partner’s approach for this specific target group. There is also a secondary school with integrated education for children with visual impairment and a small number of children with physical disabilities. There is a secondary school literary section (Kinyarwanda-Swahili-English). Both primary and secondary schools follow MINEDUC, the official government programme. There is a care coordinator who provides special needs education services to the students with visual impairment (implementation of the objectives and activities of the individual action plan and coordination of specialist ophthalmic treatment).
